Border Terrier.
The Border Terrier as a breed has only been recognised by The Kennel Club Uk for just over 100 years, in that time it has become a firm favorite breed with a wide range of people, working terrier men, show exhibitors, families, country folk and towns folk alike.
It is small and compact, making it an easy companion from small home to grand stately homes like Chatsworth. In general they travel easily and enjoy any activity that involves their human companion.
They are generally a clean breed who require minimal coat care between a twice yearly strip. Like many breeds that have been bred and produced on for the showring they do have some health concerns and it is advised that you research these before purchasing a puppy or older dog.
Like many of the terrier breeds they can be stubborn and training needs to start from day one, it needs to be consistent and fun. A Border isn't necessarily going to learn in the same way as a breed from the Working or Gundog group.
Health concerns aside they are generally a long lived breed, who with training and boundries give their owners many years of happiness and joy, testament to this is the amount of people who keep multiples and go on to look for another Border friend when one passes away.
With the advent of the internet it has meant that groups and forums have gathered linking people who love the breed together, sharing their joy in the breed and supporting one another through the bad times. A wealth of knowledge and experience is shared and great friendships formed through the love of the breed.
As a breed they were originally bred for working, this does mean that they require more exercise than some other breeds of a similar size. Borders also have a big appetite and as such they can be prone to becoming overweight, this is something that only the owner can be responsible for, without care it can lead to major health problems.
So with research before getting your Border Terrier, sense, good management, training, exercise, an appropriate diet and correct care, you are looking at a dog that fits in well, is a loyal and long lived companion and friend.
